When to visit the US?
The sheer size of North America means that the climate varies considerably from region to region. In winter, the northern states are the coldest, experiencing bitter winds and freezing temperatures. Summers are hot in the US, Washington and New England tend to be rainier and have less consistent weather patterns.
How to get to the US?
From the UK, flying is the generally the only option. Non-stop flights fly from London to New York and take anywhere between 8 to 10 hours based on the airline you choose. Stopover destinations are possible; however, they can take around 36 hours. This is the same for Washington D.C.
Flying to the West Coast like Los Angeles takes around 11-13 hours on a nonstop flight and takes around 10 hours to Vegas. Perhaps fly to a destination on the West coast and hire a car then set off on a road trip of dreams.
Getting Around the US
A popular way of travelling around this immense country is to rent a car or RV and road trip around. Route 66, now called ‘Historic Route 66' is also known as the Main Street of America'. It passes through multiple small towns, motels and restaurants and connects Los Angeles to Chicago. Becoming famous in one of John Steinbeck's books, this route is not one to be missed. Stay at hostels or short stay apartments whilst on the move.
Alternatively, you could drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, a stunning stretch of road that follows the Californian coast. Stop off for amazing views and ocean side cliff walks. If you want to see the true American country drive on the US-50, a road that stretches 3,200 miles through San Francisco, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and the Great Plains.
Distance is the biggest obstacle, so if you are not up for driving, book internal flights from state to state. If you are on more of a budget, the US has an extensive network of trains. Mainline trains go down the East Coast connecting Boston, Connecticut and New York, and other connecting routes include Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans. There are also regular bus routes, but this is the slowest way if you are on a tight schedule.
